Pearl Jam Censored

From Arstechnica:

The incident happened during a Lollapalooza webcast over at AT&T's "Blue Room" media showcase. Pearl Jam's performance of their big 90's hit "Daughter" morphed into the melody from Pink Floyd's "The Wall," and Eddie Vedder served up a pair of anti-Bush lyrics to the tune. "George Bush, leave this world alone," he sang. "George Bush, find yourself another home."

Fans at the event got to hear the words in all their glory, but in the webcast, the lines were censored—AT&T made the decision to silence them, apparently believing that they would prove offensive to listeners. When Pearl Jam found out about the censorship, the band posted a strongly-worded message on its web site.

Frightening that in this day and age, big corporations are still trying to censor, even these somewhat innocent political messages.

Nvidia abandons Video Mirroring in Vista

Currently I use a PC (with 7600GT Nvidia video card) that is connected to a 19" LCD monitor and a Philips LCD TV to watch movies and also MLB.tv. This machine is dual booting XP and Vista Home Premium. I kept using XP because the nvidia Vista drivers wouldnt allow any resolution higher than 1280x1024 once the TV was on :(. This was no problem at all in the XP drivers.

So today I installed a new BETA driver from Nvidia and I was glad to see this issue resolved ! Also had to install numerous Vista updates and had to reboot twice :(. But much to my surprise there was no option like there is in XP to display video full screen on the LCD tv !!! And after some searching it turns out this feature has been abandoned :(. Apparently Ati does support this, and it's called Theatre mode. So next time you build a Multimedia or MediaCenter PC, get an ATI card. This feature is a musthave for me, especially for MLB.TV. I need to have the baseball feed fullscreen on my TV, and not the tiny window that gets stretched to full screen as that doesnt work properly.

Slackware 12.0

Slackware 12.0 was released just a few days ago. It's currently available as a torrent, I assume the mirrors will have images of the ISO soon as well. This has always been my favorite distro, used it many many years ago ( i am really getting old). Though Ubuntu is now on my laptop and mandriva on my desktop. It's not the easiest distro out there, but it if you know your way around config files and are not afraid to learn and do some research, I think it's still one of the best.

It seems this release has some really up to date software, more info on allaboutlinux.

Potter reaches cult phenomenon status

Nice article (taken from AP) at yahoo on Harry Potter's history. I am currently reading book 6 that I hadnt come to read yet, to get ready for the release of the final book 7.

In the beginning, "Harry Potter" simply needed a home. Several British publishers turned down Rowling, believing her manuscript too long and/or too slow, before the Bloomsbury Press signed her up in 1996, for $4,000 and a warning not to expect to get rich from writing children's books. An American publisher had bigger ideas: Scholastic editor Arthur A. Levine acquired U.S. rights for $105,000.

"I can vividly remember reading the manuscript and thinking, `This reminds me of Roald Dahl,' an author of such skill, an author with a unique ability to be funny and cutting and exciting at the same time," Levine says.

"But I could not possibly have had the expectation we would be printing 12 million copies for one book (`Deathly Hallows'). That's beyond anyone's experience. I would have had to be literally insane."

Linux leaders plot counterattack on Microsoft

Interesting story on Zdnet.com:

Leading names of Linux, the world's biggest grassroots software phenomenon, are spending three days debating whether an increasingly commercial open-source community should fight or ignore the world's largest software maker.

Recently, Microsoft has sown dissension by claiming open-source programs such as Linux violate 235 of its patents while striking deals to insulate the customers of two Linux suppliers--Novell and Xandros--from patent lawsuits

Console sales

Interesting article on arstechnica on console sales the past month. Apparently Nintendo is leading the console race by a landslide. Who would have thought !

As you know, Nintendo absolutely owned the first quarter of the year, and with 338,000 more Wii consoles sold in May, the sales show no sign of slowing down. Still, the DS took top honors, with 423,000 units sold. These amounts almost look anomalous, for the sales of every other system are so far below Nintendo's preternatural numbers. As this trend continues month after month, Nintendo's domination is becoming a fact of life. When will it end?

So it seems the public is more interested in original fun family games than the next run of the mill first person shooter, Madden 2012 or Need For Speed XXII. Also I think the ps3 and xbox 360 overlap the PC games market a bit, with similar releases, while nintendo has far more original games to offer. So a Wii is a better supplement for pc gamers than a 360 is. And I am not even starting on the ps3, that console doesnt offer much at the moment, though that might change in the future when better games appear.

Drobo

Scoble has a very interesting demo of this new harddrive device on his site, called a drobo. Basically it's an enclosure for up to four sata drives, and it combines them all in one big safe drive. You can use any combo of drives, and it keeps your data safe. Looks very promising. One big drawback, it's usb 2.0 only for now, and thats a little slow. And it's pricey. An ethernet and / or Firewire connector would be excellent. Also it's not available in Europe yet.

Would love to get one though, since I got quite a few spare disks laying around and with disk drives now being so cheap, I wouldnt mind buying a big disk to stick it in this device. So I am going to keep my eye on these and see whether it gets better.

Secrets of the Lord of the Rings

Episode #3 of this podcast was released on the SQPN website this week. It's best of the three so far, in my opinion. Father Roderick does an excellent sound seeing tour of The Old Forest in LOTRO, while also telling about the history of The Old Forest and Tom Bombadil. The music and soundeffects from LOTRO come through really well in this podcast, especially the music while within Tom's house is wonderful.

This is starting to look like an sqpn Link blog, but I have to link to this one ;). They have released another interesting podcast series named the Secrets of Star Wars. Sqpn has been very busy lately with the release of quite a few new series.

Here is a quote from the press release:
“The new podcast series can give Star Wars fans new insights into the saga, and they can learn something about the Christian faith in the process,” says Fr. Roderick, a long time fan of the Star Wars films. “The podcast will make you look at these well known movies with new eyes, helping you enjoy them even more when you know how many interesting religious and moral themes are hidden below the surface.”

Saddam's Hanging

Excellent article on this ugly affair on BBC.CO.UK.

Altogether, the execution as we now see it is shown to be an ugly, degrading business, which is more reminiscent of a public hanging in the 18th Century than a considered act of 21st Century official justice.

Vista Overview

PC Magazine posted a nice Vista overview.

So far I have been using the media center on an Amd 2500xp with 756 (or so) RAM and wasnt very impressed. Sure it looks nice, but not THAT impressive. Also tried readyboost, and though the usb stick's light was constantly flashing it didnt make a bit of difference. Furthermore the harddisk always seems to be busy. And this was just while browsing the web with FireFox (cant stand IE7's interface or lack thereof). So on that particular PC i am back with MCE 2005, which works like a charm :).

And on my main pc, that i use to game / email / surf etc, I am not going to try it for a long time. It's pretty stable with XP sp2 and I havent seen any features on Vista that I care for...

Microsoft missing the podcast boat

Good article over at Geeknews. I have to agree. It's curious why Microsoft has left off any podcast support off the Zune and Windows Media Player 11. Even their new feedreader in IE7 doesnt support automatically downloading RSS enclosures, supposedly for security reasons. And now that podcasting is really taking off, it seems like Microsoft is missing the boat.

It's now available on yahoo (so you get all the yahoo 'extra's', like the toolbar etc). And it will be availble without it (I hope ;)) from microsoft at the Microsoft IE site. If it's like IE7 in Vista, it's a lot better than IE6 (and it should be), though it has some really odd interface quirks. Firefox has a way more logical interface I think.

Windows Live Writer

The new version that can be found at http://windowslivewriter.spaces.live.com/, does support Blogger Beta, using a workaround from http://jcheng.wordpress.com/2006/09/28/blogger-beta-workaround. Though livewriter says it can't retrieve my template. So you can use LiveWriter to post, but it's not as 'WYSYWYG' as it is, when you use say, Wordpress. This is more a Google fault i'd say, for not just using a standard method to allow posting and retrieving posts and categories.

Windows live writer is very nice though, much better than the standard blogger edit window. If you're posting from windows to your blog, you should definately check it out. Especially love the easy way you can now add technorati tags, something that cant be done through the blogger interface, unless you type out the technorati tags, which is a cumbersome process.

Update: A new build (145) now offers correct Blogger Beta support , it even retrieves the correct template.

Blogger Beta

Logged in today (for creating the post below) and I noticed the Beta link in my dashboard. Picked a new template and fiddled around with the layout editor. It's quite nice actually. You can add custom code, like the technorati and google ads link on the right sidebar. Also you can add RSS feeds from other sides, pick Blogger logos. Basically you add and edit everything since you can just put in text, photos and even javascript code.

So I'd say it's a huge improvement over the older blogger software, this is much easier to customize and it looks good too, some nice AJAX stuff in that layout editor, like the save button that lights up when you made changes that havent been saved !

Ah just after saving this post I noticed there is no longer a 'publishing your blog' thingy, it's posted immediately. Hooray for that !!!

Also you now can label your post, others might call em tags ;). Just to be sure, I'll still add my technorati tags here : .

Mighty Mouse

Currently I am using a PC and a Mac Mini side by side. Unfortunetely my KVM switch doesnt play nice with the Mac Mini. I had to get a ps/2 to USB convertor to get the keyboard working but the mouse is a no go. So I have two mice sitting on my right side of the desk :). One is a nice Logitech laser mouse, the other one was one of those standard logitech ones. Not bad, but I am missing some buttons and it started to irritate me. I thought that was a good excuse to order a Mighty Mouse for my Mac Mini. I got the one with the cord, the wireless one was 20 euros more and I dont really have the need for a wireless one. I'll quickly sum up the pros and cons, since there are alreay a lot of reviews of this mouse that basically all say the same thing.

    Pro:
  • Feels good in your hand

  • Very precise

  • Small 360 scroll button works very well

    Con
  • Very short cord on the non-wireless mouse, I only just reaches my USB hub

  • Side buttons are virually useless, very oddly placed and hard to press

And the software on the cd says it needs 150Mb ?!? What's that all about ?
All in all not a bad purchase, though a bit overpriced, but hey It's An Apple :).

Windows Vista not ready yet ?

Interesting post on ex-microsoft employee's blog:

http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/.

Too many things are too slow and/or don’t work. I’ve been on the betas of every Windows OS since Windows 3.1 and Vista is starting to feel good, but it doesn’t feel good enough to release to the factory in October. It feels like it needs a good six more months than that, which would mean a mid-year release next year.

I gotta agree with this. I tried the July build that came after the public Beta 2 release from the MSDN network and had quite a few problems. (IE7 constantly crashing being one of them) and the whole felt a bit sluggish on an AMD3500+ with 1Gb. We'll see whether MS will ship it early next year or wait a bit a bit to straighten things out.

Here is another article on windows vista at winsupersite.com.

Mel Gibson's serie pulled by ABC

Interesting news on the creator of Passion of the Christ. Perhaps he should actually read the bible and put it into practise ;).

The move came after Gibson was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving early on Friday and was reported to have launched into a tirade against Jews, asking the arresting officer if he was a Jew and blaming the Jews for starting all wars.

The actor, who holds strong conservative Catholic religious and political views and whose father is a Holocaust denier, apologized on Saturday and has entered a rehabilitation program to treat alcoholism.

http://wbloggar.com/.

Looks very nice so far, quite a few editing options and compatible with a lot of blog software. Shame my Greendale.tk blog doesnt seem to work, I think it's a server side security thing, that prevents posting from other sites...
